  • Non-digital Photography

So Jaymi recently picked up a new hobby: vintage photography. And by vintage, I mean taking pictures with old non-digital SLR cameras that use 35mm film. She asked me to look up those types of cameras on eBay. Then I remembered that my dad had an old SLR like that. Then she found out that her dad also had one from way back when, so now we're both playing with our "new" old-school toys.

    Here's the camera I'm using:

It's a Canon AE-1, with a 50mm 1:1.8 lens and a 75-210mm telephoto soul-stealer lens. This camera is older than I am! I'm sort of amazed that it still works.

At least for me, it's surprisingly fun taking pictures with it. It's soo much different than taking pictures with digital cameras. Setting up & focusing the shot, reading the built-in light meter, and adjusting the shutter speed. Since I don't have the unlimited shot capacity of a memory card, I have to be super selective with my shots. And I have to make sure everything is set up right, and that I'm holding it steady so it doesn't come out blurry. But I find it all pretty cool. I'm soo hooked. And I'm really glad Costco still develops film. It was about $7 to develop a roll of 24, plus a CD with all the pictures on it.

Here are some of the pictures I took. If you ask me, they turned out pretty good, but I still need some practice. And I always forget to the advance the film after taking a picture. And for some reason, the pictures look way better printed out (on the glossy photo paper) than the digital copies (on the CD, shown below).

Can't wait for this rain to go away so I take more pictures outside.
