I volunteered at WonderCon again this year. I got to work the schwag table, where people could pick up a program, lanyard, and bag after receiving their passes at the registration desk. I basically just had to keep it stocked.
I worked with 2 other people at the table. I forget the guy’s name, but the girl’s name was Jade. She seemed, I don’t know how to describe it, but sorta peculiar, I guess. She seemed like someone who kept to herself, which for the most part, she did. When I introduced myself, she smiled & shook my hand, then introduced herself, and then all of a sudden the smile went away and her face got all serious and then she asked me, “Is it Eric with a C or a K?” I said “with a C”, and her face returned to normal and said “Ok, that’s good. My dad’s is spelled with a K”. I smiled & nodded, but I was thinking “wtf?!” Apparent daddy issues, I guess.
No one else volunteered with me this year, but I happened to run into my old co-worker from Pronto, Stew, who I last saw at last year’s WonderCon. He was also volunteering and had the same shift as me, so we hung out and caught up on stuff.
After my shift was over, I met up with Mark and walked the entire floor. We picked up GIR hats and a Vegan Police shirt at the Mighty Fine table.
I also picked up a herpes plush at the Giant Microbes table.
We wanted to get the limited print SF Giants X-men comic at the Marvel booth, but the line was ridiculously long.
Here's a pic of all my loot:
We killed timed until the Green Lantern panel. The line for that was soo ridiculous. It started inside, went outside, around a corner, and down the entire length of the building. At one point, we were at the corner, and people were still coming out to line up. The looks on their faces as they saw the line continued well past the corner never got old. It was awesome. Anywho, we made it in, but we were all the way in the back. But it was cool cause they had big screens on both sides of the stage.
No homo, but Ryan Reynolds is a very likable guy. He seemed to charm the pants off everyone in the room. He was like a friendly next-door neighbor type. I was expecting the girls to ask Ryan questions, which they did, but even all the guys were asking Ryan questions.
I sorta felt bad for Blake “i can’t stop moving while i’m answering your questions” Lively. A bunch of the pictures I took of her came out blurry cause she’d flail her arms around while talking, it was soo annoying. I think she only got 2 questions, which were from girls, and the rest were either just for Ryan or for both of them, in which Ryan answered and she’s just nod in agreement. But that whole experience was cool. It’s not everyday that you’re in the same room with movie stars.
I also saw & spoke with Chris Gore, from Attack of the Show. I was wearing my GIR hat when I walked by his table at the G4 booth and he asked me where I got it from. So that was cool.
I noticed that there weren’t as many people dressed up as last year. Less Storm Troopers, less Bounty Hunters, less Naruto characters, less everything in general. I was thinking it was cause of the weather. It was abnormally hot in SF the whole weekend. I saw one of the Storm Troopers take off their helmet, and they were hella drenched in sweat. And then there the people who have no business in cosplay. There was a heavy-set girl not in ayn costume in particular, just a fish net & pasties, and then a similiarly shaped beefy girl in the slave leia costume, but stuff overflowing, and rolls, and bleh........ I soo wish that I could un-see those two.
Overall, it was fun, but my feet were killing me by the end of the day. I signed up to volunteer the next day, but I ended up not going. I didn’t feel like waking up early again. I ended up missing out on the Cowboys & Aliens panel with Jon Favreau, and a signing by Vampy, Linda Le. Well, there’s always next year.
