  • Dual Boot Hackintosh

    caution: nerd alert

Yup, I did it again. I Hackintosh'd another PC, aka put the Mac OS X on PC hardware. I really didn't intend on doing this when I first built my new PC a back in August. But maybe a month ago, I read somewhere online that the motherboard I'm using was Hackintosh-able. So why not do it? I already have (legit) Mac OS X software, and most of the hardware in my current PC would work. All I needed to get was another hard drive / solid state drive (cause I want to keep both OS's separate), and I happened to pick one  up on Black Friday.

So 3 days and a couple re-installs of both OS's later, I have every up & running. My Windows 7 partition is more or less the same as before I started this, with the exception of some missing Firefox bookmarks (no biggie). The Mac OS X partition runs smooth, with the (big) exception of the wi-fi card doesn't connect to the internet. It can connect to the router just fine, but no other data is transmitted. I looked it up on some forums, and they say it's a 10.6.5 issue (snow leopard). If I installed 10.6.4, I'd work just fine, but then my video card wouldn't work (driver only works in 10.6.5). So I had to choose between internet connection and video output. That one's a no-brainer.....

So I have to buy a mac, as well as windows, -compatible wi-fi card. Some people in the forums have actually built a custom wifi card using the wi-fi card found in all apple laptops and a pci-e adapter. All the parts can be bought on eBay for around $30, and it's compatible in both OS's. So I'll probably end up doing that.

I don't even know why I did this. I'm probably not going to use the Mac OS much, just like I don't really use the dell mini 10 that I hackintosh'd last year (it's sitting in it's case under my desk). But I guess it's nice to know that I at least have the option. And it didn't cost much, since it's using most of the hardware & software that I already had. And I guess I like doing stuff like this, too.
